Pastor Julius Reuss

Georg Karl Julius Reuss (born November 20, 1814 in Krofdorf near Wetzlar , † February 4, 1883 in Simmern ) was a Protestant pastor who was involved in the idea of diakonia throughout his professional life .

Life and work

Reuss came from a pastor's family, his father Georg Jakob Ludwig Reuss was a pastor in Krofdorf and then in Burbach , his birthplace. His older brother Theodor Ludwig Christian was pastor in Dickenschied for 47 years until his death on April 23, 1888 . He, too, was involved in the environment of the smithy.

Reuss came to Simmern in Hunsrück in 1845 after studying theology at the University of Halle (Saale) and taking the corresponding exams . There he first became an adjunct to the owner of the second parish in Simmern, Ferdinand Schneider, who one year later celebrated his 50th anniversary in office and then served for another six years. In 1853 he became his successor after Schneider retired. From 1867 to 1883 he then held the first parish in Simmern. In 1879 he was elected superintendent of the Simmern parish . In the second position he was followed by Hugo Oertel, the son of the Hunsrück pastor, superintendent and folk writer WO von Horn , who was later to become his successor as superintendent. Reuss was not married.

Life's work

Reuss was influenced by the thoughts of Johann Heinrich Wichern , the founder of the Inner Mission . He therefore took over the chairmanship of the Inner Mission association founded in 1848 on his initiative by citizens of Simmern with the aim of building a rescue house for children from neglected backgrounds on the Hunsrück. This was then achieved in 1851 with the blacksmiths between Simmern and Nannhausen . They are the first and therefore the oldest Protestant social welfare organization on the Hunsrück. Reuss was director of the institutes until his death. There he was buried in the institution cemetery after his death. His grave is still honored today.

Honor

The dormitory of the Schmiedelanstalten for the mentally handicapped in the Julius Reuss dormitory opened in Kastellaun in 1998 was named in his memory .
