Julius Schmid (painter, 1854)

Julius Schmid (born February 3, 1854 in Vienna , † February 1, 1935 in Mödling ) was an Austrian painter and draftsman. The merchant's son studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1871–78 and received the Rome Prize in 1878.

In 1899 he received a small gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition . From 1907 to 1925 he was a full professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1900 he received the bronze medal of the Paris World Exhibition for his Ebner-Eschenbach portrait. He worked as a portrait and history painter and created a. a. the ceiling painting of the ballroom in the house of the Viennese merchants (1903). His most famous work, however, is the Schubertiade . For his services to Austria and especially to his hometown Vienna, he received the Ring of Honor of the City of Vienna in 1929 . He was the father of the Rostock gynecologist Hans Hermann Schmid .

Schmid died in Mödling, where he was also buried in a town grave of honor.
