Johann Julius Siben (born April 11, 1851 in Deidesheim ; † October 4, 1907 there ) was a leading figure of political Catholicism in the Rhineland-Palatinate and winery owner in the small Palatinate town of Deidesheim, which he also headed as mayor for ten years .

family

Siber's father was Georg Siben, he was a vineyard owner and mayor of Deidesheim; his mother Apollonia geb. Moßbacher came from Forst an der Weinstrasse . He had six siblings, his brother Josef Siben was a member of the Bavarian Chamber of Deputies. On June 17, 1876, he married Barbara Josephina Augusta Kuhn, the daughter of a lawyer, in Landau . Like Siben, her son Arnold held the office of mayor in Deidesheim; he practiced it from 1920 to 1933.

Life

From 1864 to 1869 Siben attended grammar school in Speyer , he left it as the best graduate of his year. He then studied philosophy and law in Bonn , Heidelberg and Würzburg ; the doctorate in both disciplines took place in Heidelberg. He then worked as a trainee lawyer in Neustadt and Landau , and passed the major legal state examination in Speyer. In 1878, after the unexpected death of his father, Siben and his siblings took over their father's winery, which is now called Georg Siben Erben . As a result, he was unable to continue his academic career in the civil service.

Siben campaigned for the interests of the Catholics in the Palatinate and appeared as a speaker at many Catholic assemblies: He was the main speaker and leader of the Palatinate Catholic Assembly on July 28, 1889 in Neustadt , in which about 12,000 people took part, in order to oppose “the straitjacket protest that the State had put on the Church ”. On September 23, 1889, Siben participated in another event in Munich . In 1890 Siben was a speaker at the Koblenz Catholic Day and in 1891 he spoke at the first large meeting of the People's Association for Catholic Germany in Cologne . Furthermore, Siben was also involved in the Görres Society and the Albertus Magnus Society.

Since 1884 Siben had a seat in the city council of Deidesheim, had been the city's first alderman since 1885 and was Mayor of Deidesheim from 1895 to 1905.

Active in imperial and state politics

The family fortune gave Siben the opportunity to become politically active. In keeping with his conservative Catholic family tradition, he joined the Center Party . Together with the Speyer journalist Eugen Jäger and the grammar school teacher Franz Xaver Schädler , Siben was involved in the founding of the Palatinate Center Party in Neustadt an der Haardt in 1882 and was elected first chairman at Jäger's suggestion; he held this office for the next 25 years.

For the Center Party, Siben ran for the first time in the constituency of Speyer-Ludwigshafen for a seat in the Reichstag in 1877 . However, he had no chance against the liberal candidates who, unlike Bavaria on the right bank of the Rhine, dominated the one in the Rhine Palatinate . The same picture emerged in the Reichstag elections for the next 25 years, in which Siben ran again. In order to have a chance against the strong dominance of the liberal forces in state elections, the SPD and the center formed an electoral alliance in 1899. As a result, Siben was one of the first center members to win a seat in the Chamber of Deputies of the Kingdom of Bavaria . In 1905 he succeeded again in gaining a seat in the Chamber of Deputies. Further political ambitions prevented Siber from suffering from a heart condition, which is why he resigned the chairmanship of the Palatinate Center Party in spring 1907 and renounced another state parliament candidacy.
