Sir Julius Charles Wernher, 1st Baronet (born April 9, 1850 as Julius Carl Wernher in Darmstadt ; † May 21, 1912 ) was a German-born diamond dealer and art collector who belonged to the English establishment .

family

Wernher was a son of Friedrich August Wernher, building director of the Hessian Ludwig Railway , and his wife Elise, geb. Willow bush. He married Alice Sedgwick Mankiewicz. From this marriage three sons were born.

Life

Wernher was born in Darmstadt , Hessen and trained in a bank in Frankfurt . In 1871, at the age of 21, he moved to London , where Jules Porgès discovered his business talent. Porgès was a major diamond dealer with the company Porgès & Cie, Paris . In 1873 he sent Wernher to the diamond mines in Kimberley , Cape Colony as his agent and diamond buyer .

In Kimberley, Wernher met Alfred Beit who, like Wernher, became a partner in Porgès & Cie in 1880. In 1890 Jules Porgès withdrew from the business and Beit and Wernher founded Wernher, Beit & Co as the successor company . Together with Beit, Wernher had great success in the diamond and gold trade and became one of the richest men in England of his time.

The Lisbon tram and its entire network were sold to Lisbon Electric Tramways Ltd., which was founded in 1899, to raise capital . from Great Britain , a subsidiary of Wernher, Beit & Co. , leased for 99 years.

His net worth was approximately £ 12 million at the time of his death. In 1905 he was given the hereditary title of baronet , of Luton Hoo in the County of Bedford .

Wernher created a rich art collection, most of which can be seen in Ranger's House in Greenwich .
