Jung Hong-won (born October 9, 1944 in Hadong , Gyeongsangnam-do ) is a South Korean politician and was the 42nd Prime Minister of South Korea from 2013 to 2015  . He is a member of the conservative Saenuri party .

Before entering politics, he studied law at Sungkyunkwan University . He then worked as a prosecutor , resigned in 2012 and was then the first candidate for the office of Prime Minister in the government of President Park Geun-hye . After confirmation by the South Korean National Assembly , he was sworn in on February 26, 2013.

After the reaction of the government of South Korea to the accident involving the Sewol ferry came under massive criticism, Jung Hong-won offered to resign on April 27, 2014. President Park Geun-hye accepted it, but said he should stay in office until the ship was recovered. On February 16, 2015, he was replaced by Lee Wan-koo .
