Junior Mendes (born September 15, 1976 in Balham , Greater London ) is an England-born former football player who was active for the national team of Montserrat .
Club career
Mendes played for Chelsea in his youth and signed a professional contract there in 1995. Without a job in the professional team, he was released from his contract in April 1996 and moved to the Scottish second division club FC St. Mirren . In four years at St. Mirren, he played 120 league games and scored 21 goals. After the club's first division ascent in 2000, he moved to league competitor and co-promoted Dunfermline Athletic for £ 20,000 , but did not get along there and returned to St. Mirren after two years and only 13 league appearances for half a year.
In January 2003 he moved to the English third division club Mansfield Town , for which he was active for another season in the fourth division even after relegation. The direct resurgence was narrowly missed after Mansfield lost in the play-off final Huddersfield Town on penalties, the club that Mendes joined the following season. At Huddersfield he played little role in his second season and was first loaned to Northampton Town and later to Grimsby Town , before his contract expired in the summer of 2006 and he moved to Notts County on a free transfer . Even at Notts County, his hit rate remained mixed and he was often only used as a substitute, after a loan period at the end of the season at Lincoln City , he again received no contract with his previous employer.
Mendes remained without a club for half a year and received in February 2008 an offer from the ambitious fifth division Aldershot Town , with which he reached promotion to Football League Two at the end of the season. Even at Aldershot, his time was limited, in April 2009 he was finally loaned out to Stevenage Borough for the rest of the season , before his contract, which expired at the end of the season, was no longer renewed. Then he hung on for a year at Ayr United .
National team
In 2004 Mendes played for the Montserrat national team in two qualifying matches for the 2005 Caribbean Cup . In the 4-5 defeat against Antigua he managed a goal.
