Juniperus zanonii is a plant from the genus juniper ( Juniperus ) within the family of cypress plants (Cupressaceae). It was first described in 2010. It occurs only in northeastern Mexico.

description

Juniperus zanonii grows as an evergreen shrub whose morphology is Juniperus monticola f. compacta resembles. The twigs are 3 to 5 millimeters thick. The bark is rough.

The needle-like leaves have raised, oval to elongated leaf glands . The scale leaves are often furrowed and have flat or raised, oval-shaped leaf glands, which are not always recognizable. Dead leaves remain on the branches for a long time.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Juniperus zanonii is in northeastern Mexico. It includes the Sierra La Viga , the Sierra La Marta , the Cerro Potosi and the Sierra Pena Nevada .

Juniperus zanonii grows in the subalpine and alpine vegetation level up to the tree line. It grows there on soils that have formed over limestone . They are often found together with Pinus culminicola and Pinus hartwegii .

Systematics

It was first described as Juniperus zanonii in 2010 by Robert Phillip Adams in Phytologia , Volume 92, Number 1, Page 112. The specific epithet zanonii honors Thomas A. Zanoni , the first Ph.D. -Students of Adams. Investigations carried out by Adams showed that Juniperus zanonii differed from the morphologically similar species Juniperus monticola f. compacta is genetically different. These results were published in 2013 by Adams et al. approved.
