description

Habitus in the habitat at a higher altitude

Vegetative characteristics

Pinus hartwegii grows as a tree that reaches heights of 20 to 30 meters and trunk diameters of up to 100 centimeters. In old trees, the lower branches are large, thick and sloping downwards, the higher branches horizontal to slightly ascending. The branches form a thick, round crown . Young trees have a dense, pyramidal crown. The bark of old trees is reddish brown, thick and divided into large, flat, scaly plates by narrow, vertical and horizontal cracks. In young specimens, the bark is rough and furrowed, but not divided into plates. The branches are thick, stiff, upright, rough, and brown. The number of cotyledons is usually five (rarely six).

The wood is hard, heavy, resinous. The sapwood is yellowish white, the heartwood light brown.

The needle leaves are in bundles of three short shoots , often four and five. The sheaths are permanent, brown and 10 to 15 millimeters long. They are thick, stiff, upright, eight to six inches long, and often stand in groups at the end of branches. The edge is finely sawn. There are three to twelve resin canals, often six or seven. There are two vascular bundles that are very close together.

Generative characteristics

The cones are oblong-egg-shaped, dark-purple. They stand in groups of two to five on scaly, short stems.

The cones are 8 to 10 centimeters long, rarely up to 17 centimeters long, egg-shaped and almost symmetrical, slightly curved. They stand in pairs to five on very short stems. The color is dark purple to black. The cones open to maturity in winter and are semi-persistent. When they fall off, the stem and some of the bottom scales remain on the branch. The cone scales are thin, flexible. The apophysis is flat, keeled transversely, the umbo sits dorsally, is flat, very dark and reinforced with a small thorn.

The seeds are about 5 millimeters long, almost black. The seed wing is 10 to 11 millimeters long, light brown.

Distribution map

Occurrence

Pinus hartwegii is very scattered in Mexico and Guatemala . In Mexico, Pinus hartwegii is known from the states of Nuevo León , Tamaulipas , Hidalgo , Puebla , Veracruz , Tlaxcala , México , Federal District , Morelos , Colima , Michoacán , Jalisco , Oaxaca and Chiapas . In Guatemala it occurs in the southern parts of the country. There are reports of occurrences in Honduras and El Salvador , whose affiliation with Pinus hartwegii is questionable.

Pinus hartwegii grows at high altitudes and often forms species-specific stands at 3000 to 3700 meters. In the snow-capped mountains of Mexico, it is the only species of pine that forms the tree line . In addition to snow and frost throughout the year, wind is also an important factor on these mountain peaks.

Taxonomy

The first description of Pinus hartwegii was in 1839 by John Lindley in Edwards's Botanical Register, Volume 25: Misc. 62 ... The specific epithet hartwegii honors the German plant collector Karl Theodor Hartweg (1812–1871). Homonym Pinus hartwegii Roezl was published in 1857.
