Juniperus coxii is a plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is native to southeast Asia and is considered a variety of Juniperus recurva by some authors.

description

Juniperus coxii grows as an evergreen shrub or tree that can reach heights of 10 to 12 meters. The brown to cinnamon-brown bark flakes off in broad strips or plates. The long branches are drooping.

The scale-like leaves are 6 to 10 millimeters long. The upper side of the leaf shows two greenish-white stomatal bands .

Juniperus coxii is dioecious-separate sexes ( diocese ). The flowering time is in spring and the seeds ripen in the second year. The berry cones are gyro-shaped with a length of 6 to 8 millimeters and a thickness of 5 to 6 millimeters. They are initially greenish brown in color and turn almost black as they mature. Each cone contains one, with a length of 5 to 6 millimeters and a width of 3 to 4 millimeters, conical to egg-shaped, triple-toothed seed.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Juniperus coxii includes Bhutan , northern Myanmar , the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim as well as in China the south-east of Xizang and the north-west of Yunnan . According to WCSP, however, the species only occurs from Yunnan to northern Myanmar.

Juniperus coxii thrives at altitudes of 1,800 to 3,800 meters. The species is mainly found in moist mountain forests.

use

The wood from Juniperus coxii is used to make furniture and coffins.

Systematics

It was first described as Juniperus coxii in 1932 by Albert Bruce Jackson in New Flora and Silva 5 , p. 33, f. 13-14. It is considered by some authors to be a variety of Juniperus recurva . However, genetic studies revealed that it is more closely related to the scaly juniper ( Juniperus squamata ). Another synonym for Juniperus coxii A.B. Jacks. is Sabina recurva var. coxii (AB Jacks.) WC Cheng & LK Fu .

Hazard and protection

Juniperus coxii is classified as "Endangered" on the IUCN Red List . It is pointed out, however, that a new review of the hazard is necessary.
