Juniperus gracilior is a plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is endemic to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola .

description

Juniperus gracilior grows as an evergreen shrub or tree that can reach heights of 10 to 15 meters. The loosely standing branches and the thin twigs form a spherical crown in the tree shape . The shrub form is mostly prostrate. The bark of the thicker branches flakes off in irregularly shaped plates.

The light green to gray-green, scale-like leaves are opposite or alternate on the branches and are 1 to 1.5 millimeters in size. They have a pointed tip and a mostly inconspicuous, oval-shaped, dark brown leaf gland.

The flowering time of Juniperus gracilior is likely to be in winter. The berry cones stand on a straight stem up to 2 millimeters long and are spherical to kidney-shaped with a diameter of 5 to 7 millimeters. When ripe they are reddish blue in color and have a bluish sheen. Each cone bears one or two seeds.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Juniperus gracilior is on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola . In the Dominican Republic , they can be found near Constanza and Hato del Yaque . In Haiti they can be found along the Chaîne de la Selle mountain range .

Juniperus gracilior thrives at altitudes of 1000 to 2550 meters. The species is found mainly in the highlands.

Systematics

It was first described as Juniperus gracilior in 1913 by Robert Knud Friedrich Pilger in "Symbolae Antillanae seu Fundamenta Florae Indiae Occidentalis", Volume 7, Page 481.

The species is divided into up to three varieties :

  • Juniperus gracilior var. Ekmanii (Florin) RPAdams : It occurs in the Chaîne de la Selle in southern Haiti. It grows as a tree or a shrub. A synonym is Juniperus ekmanii Florin .
  • Juniperus gracilior var. Gracilior is the nominate form and occurs in the western Dominican Republic near Constanza and Hato del Yaque. It grows as a tree or a shrub.
  • Juniperus gracilior var. Urbaniana (Pilg. & Ekman) RPAdams occurs only in Haiti on the Pic la Selle . It grows as a prostrate shrub. A synonym is Juniperus urbaniana Pilg. & Ekman .

Hazard and protection

Juniperus gracilior is listed as "critically endangered" on the IUCN Red List . The ekmanii variety is listed as "critically endangered". However, it is pointed out that a new check of the hazard is necessary. Settlements are mentioned as the main endangerment factor, as a result of which populations of the species are only preserved in inaccessible areas.
