Jurgis Šaulys (born May 5, 1879 in Balsėnai , Wolost Švėkšna , Tauragė district , now Klaipėda Rajongemeinde ; † October 18, 1948 in Lugano ) was a Lithuanian politician and diplomat .

Life

From 1887 he studied in Kaltinėnai near Šilalė , then in Palanga , from 1897 to 1899 in the Vilnius seminary . He was dismissed from the seminar because of the attitude and dissemination of the Lithuanian press during the Russian ban from 1864 to 1904. From 1903 he studied economics at the University of Bern , where he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1912 . In 1917 he was selected as Lietuvos Taryba at the Vilnius Conference . There he was general secretary and first deputy chairman. From 1918 to 1923 and from 1927 to 1946 he worked as a diplomat. He was envoy to Berlin (1918–1919 and 1931–1938), Switzerland (1919, 1939–1946), Italy (1921–1923), Vatican (1927–1931), Poland (1938–1939).

Until 1904 he was a member of the Lietuvos Demokrat 190 partija .
