The Law and Political Science Faculty of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn is located in the Juridicum . It is the location of the legal and political science library.

history

The planning for the construction of the Juridicum began in 1957. Before moving into the Juridicum, the legal training a. a. took place in the main building of the University at the Hofgarten. However, the spatial possibilities were limited there. A strong growth in the number of students and further appointments created a space shortage, so that the move out of the main building or the construction of the Juridicum was planned. The building was erected by the Bonn State Building Authority and Heinrich Raderschall was commissioned to plan the gardens . The construction costs, which were estimated at 6.5 million DM at the start of planning,  amounted to around 18 million DM after construction due to planning changes. On October 11, 1963, the foundation stone for the construction of the Juridicum on Adenauerallee was laid. On the certificate under the foundation stone is written “Justitia fundamentum regnorum!”, Which translates as “Justice is the basis of the empires”.

When the shell was completed on April 8, 1965 and the roof structure was erected, the topping-out ceremony could be celebrated before the inauguration took place on November 21, 1967. Adjacent to the existing towers, two more towers were planned for expansion, but no building permit was granted due to legal obstacles.

architecture

The Juridicum was supposed to represent a "representative building in the country" with its restrained construction and, together with the new building of the university and state library opposite, give the city a new face in 1960.

The senior government director Albert Wernicke entrusted the planning of the new building to the young architect Wolfgang Himmel. As a student of Hans Schwippert , he was influenced by the architects Erich Mendelsohn and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe . Heinrich Raderschall was commissioned to design the garden .

Research and teaching were structurally separated. Teaching is located in the actual Juridicum, while research is outsourced to the two adjacent towers. The inner courtyard has been designed in the "style of the times". The building should be free of "false representation" and should represent a well-structured means to an end - namely the actual study. The architectural rigor and clear order of the forms should motivate the purposeful study.

The facade of the Juridicum is a modification of the work "Ríu-Kíu-C" designed in 1956 by the Hungarian artist Victor Vasarely and was completed in 1969 at the Juridicum. The peculiarity of the mosaic, which is derived from square shapes, is that each building block can be "mentally removed from the work and inserted in a different place". This style stands for being able to break away from a fixed position and view the situation from an alternative perspective and connects the architecture of the Juridicum with the demands placed on lawyers, in the sense of audiatur et altera pars .

“The university proved a (...) lucky hand when building the Juridicum. (…) [T] he three parts of the building of different heights [are] carefully balanced against each other and interlocked. (…) [They] create architectural tension in their interplay, in their reciprocal assignment of horizontal and vertical, windowed and windowless elements and lead to a loosening accentuation of the surrounding streets.
