Justin Harvey Smith

Justin Harvey Smith (born January 13, 1857 in Boscawen , New Hampshire , † March 21, 1930 in Brooklyn , New York ) was an American historian.

Live and act

Smith was the son of the preacher Ambrose Smith (1820–1862) and his wife Cynthia Maria Egerton (1821–1899). Smith began his studies around 1875 at Dartmouth College in Hanover (NH) and graduated in 1877 with a "BA". He then moved to the Union Theological Seminary in New York and received his "MA" in 1884

In the same year Smith was hired by Charles Scribner for his publisher of the same name and stayed there until 1908. In that year Smith was able to complete his habilitation and was entrusted with several teaching assignments in the next few years. At the same time, he conducted research on his most important topic, the Mexican-American War .

The American Historical Association appointed Smith in 1917 as chairman of its Historical Manuscript Commission . After six years he gave up this office and retired into private life. He died in Brooklyn on March 21, 1930 and was buried in Plains Cemetery in Boscawen.
