Justina Kristina Casagli (born Wässelius ; born October 4, 1794 in Stockholm , † 1841 in Parma ) was a Swedish opera singer (soprano).

Life

Justina Casagli was the eighth child of a tapestry manufacturer . Her older sister, Marie Jeannette Wässelius, was also a singer. From 1805 she studied at the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm.

In February 1812 she married the dancer Lodovico Casagli (1769–1831) and has since performed under the name Casagli .

In April 1812 she was engaged at the Royal Opera in Stockholm. She celebrated her first stage success in operas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . Among other things, she sang Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro , Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Papagena in Die Zauberflöte . Contemporary reviews praised her beautiful and flexible voice, her attractive appearance and her charm as a stage actress. In 1818 she left Sweden with her husband and went to Italy, where she lived and mainly performed in the following years. There she sang in Turin in 1820 in the opera La Cenerentola by Gioacchino Rossini . The performance was played ensuite 28 times and was a triumphant success for Casagli. In 1823 she appeared in Rome in Rossini's opera La donna del lago. In 1827 she appeared in Lucca in a production of the comic opera Il matrimonio segreto ( The Secret Marriage ) by Domenico Cimarosa .

In 1827 she was appointed to the National Theater in Munich as the first Swedish singer for life . After the death of her husband, Casagli first returned to Sweden in 1831. However, there was no new engagement at the Royal Opera in Stockholm. The director of the opera at the time, Count Lagerbjelke, feared that her voice was now used up. In addition, her position had meanwhile been filled with the soprano Henriette Widerberg .

Casagli then returned to Italy and lived in Parma. According to contemporary sources, she threw herself out of a window in 1841 in an attack of depression , arguably also caused by financial problems, and died of suicide .
