Justinian Frisch

Justinian Frisch , pseudonym Friliko (born July 19, 1879 in Kritzendorf ; died July 2, 1949 in Cambridge ), was an Austrian journalist, translator and book designer.

Life

Justinian Frisch came from a secular Jewish family. His father Moritz Frisch (1849–1913) was a printer's owner and from 1900 a partner in Vorwärts-Verlag in Vienna. His sister Martha was married to Viktor Tausk from 1900 to 1908 and became a well-known politician and women's rights activist. Justinian studied law and in 1902 at the University of Vienna to Dr. jur. PhD. Then he joined his father's publishing house, Dr. Fresh & Co. a. From 1913 he was a partner of the publishing house together with Alfred Simon, but resigned as such after “irreconcilable differences between the two partners” and from 1914 was only an authorized signatory . In 1916 he left the company entirely. In the 1920s he ran the advertising company Atelier Friliko . From 1936 he worked for the Bermann-Fischer-Verlag, which had moved to Vienna, as head of book production.

With the help of the Bonnier family , he managed to emigrate to Stockholm . Here he wrote for the exile magazine Austrian Information and worked for Bermann Fischer as a translator, editor and production manager. One of his most famous translations is The Women of the House of Wu by Pearl S. Buck .

In 1946 he returned to Austria as co-editor of the Austrian monthly papers . Soon afterwards he emigrated again and went to Great Britain. In 1947 he translated John Herseys report on Hiroshima .

Frisch was married to the pianist Auguste, geb. Meitner, a sister of Lise Meitner . The couple's son Otto Frisch emigrated to Great Britain; he was an eminent nuclear physicist.
