Martha Tausk

Martha Tausk (born January 15, 1881 in Vienna as Martha Frisch; † October 20, 1957 in Nijmegen ) was an Austrian politician ( SDAP ), journalist and women's rights activist.

In November 1918 she was the first woman to be a member of the Styrian provisional state assembly, even before the proclamation of women's suffrage. In 1919 Martha Tausk was elected to the Styrian state parliament. In 1927/28 she was a member of the Federal Council .

Life

Her father Moritz Frisch (1849–1913) ran a small print shop in which the first issues of the social democratic workers' newspaper were printed, and in 1900 became a partner in Vorwärts-Verlag . Her mother was a member of the board of directors of the General Austrian Women's Association . Martha Tausk was confronted with the concerns of the workers' and women's movements at an early stage.

She attended business school and, together with her brother Justinian, received private lessons from Marianne and Auguste Fickert . During school she was friends with Lise Meitner .

In 1900 she married the later psychoanalyst Victor Tausk (1879-1919), from whom she was divorced in 1908. She had two sons.

In 1928 Martha Tausk was brought to the Socialist Workers International in Zurich by Friedrich Adler . There she headed the newly created periodical Frauenrecht - newspaper for the working women of Switzerland .

From persecution by the Gestapo, she fled to her son in Holland in 1939 and then to Brazil . After the war she returned to the Netherlands .
