The prison in Kiel is the third largest prison in Schleswig-Holstein .
It provides 276 detention places for the standard implementation up to three years duration. The deportation detention facility (AHE) in Rendsburg with 56 places, which was closed on November 1, 2014, was connected.

The JVA forms a building complex with the District Court of Kiel . The building near downtown Kiel was constructed between 1914 and 1918. In the five-storey institution, the cell and workshop areas are arranged around four inner courtyards. The free hour courtyard to the west of the building is surrounded on the other three sides by an outer wall.
