Justus Schneider (born February 15, 1842 in Fulda , Electorate of Hesse ; died April 8, 1904 in Fulda, German Empire ) was a German doctor and writer who was known for his commitment to the Rhön low mountain range . He initiated the Rhön Club in Gersfeld in 1876 .

Life

His father Johann Joseph Schneider was a doctor. Through him he often traveled the Rhön. The first natural history description of the Rhön Mountains was made by him in 1816. From 1851 Schneider attended the "Electoral High School" in Fulda and also studied medicine. In 1867 he opened a practice. A son was born from a marriage in 1868 in 1870.

His father's enthusiasm also passed on to him and prompted him to create a Rhön guide in which he described the mountains and the culture. Here he decided to found an association to better develop and market the Rhön, which should create a modest prosperity for the residents. On August 6, 1876, he invited people from all over the Rhön to Gersfeld , where the “ Rhön Club” was founded. Schneider was president of this until his death on April 8, 1904.

As chairman of the Fulda branch association and the main association, Schneider founded the tradition of opening the hiking year with a hike to the Milseburg on Epiphany . This was mostly followed by a lecture on the Rhön in the Hotel Milseburg.

In 1903 he fell seriously ill on a trip to a world medical congress. However, he had been suffering from liver swelling for a long time . Several professors examined him, but could not do anything. In September he told his son that he would soon die and recommended the Rhön Club to him.

On April 8, 1904, he fell asleep at 4 a.m. and was buried in the old cemetery on Goethestrasse in Fulda.

Commemoration

A monument was erected by the Rhön Club on the Milseburg , which he had climbed several times. A spring below the Rother Kuppe was named Justusbrunnen in his honor. In Gersfeld a street was named Justus-Schneider-Strasse.
