Kálmán Lambrecht

Kálmán Lambrecht (born May 1, 1889 in Pancsova , Austria-Hungary , †  January 7, 1936 ), also known as Koloman Lambrecht , was a Hungarian paleontologist .

Life

Thanks to the influence of Ottó Herman , Lambrecht became a member of the Hungarian Ornithological Institute in 1909. In 1913 he received his doctorate in zoology , paleontology and chemistry . On the recommendation of Baron Franz Nopcsa , he became a member of the Geological Institute in Budapest in 1917 and librarian of the institute in 1926. In 1934 he took on the same function at the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest and received a professorship at the University of Pécs . Ottó Herman encouraged Lambrecht to specialize in the hitherto neglected research area of palaeornithology . Three years before his death, Lambrecht's standard work Handbuch der Palaeornithologie appeared , in which he described over a thousand pages fossil, subfossil and also abnormal skulls and bones of recent birds from various natural history museums in Europe. In it he established numerous genera for extinct taxa, which were placed in recent genera, such as Miocorax for the cormorants, Miocorvus for the corvids or Proardea for the herons. In 1928 Lambrecht wrote the first scientific description of Palaeotis weigelti , a bird from the Eocene , which for a long time was thought to be the oldest fossil bustard . It was only when more bones were found in the 1980s that it was discovered that the species belongs to the order ratites .

Honors and Dedication Names

The Kálmán-Lambrecht cave in the Bükk Mountains, the fossil bustard species Otis lambrechti and the fossil duck species Anas lambrechti (now a synonym for the Bahamian duck ) are named after Lambrecht .
