Károly Markó the Elder (born September 25, 1793 in Leutschau , today Levoča, Slovakia ; † November 19, 1860 Villa Appeggi near Antella, Florence ) was a Hungarian painter.

Life

Markó received his first drawing lessons from his father, but then studied technology in Klausenburg and Pest . From 1818 to 1821 he attended the drawing school in Pest before he entered the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 1822 , where he stayed until 1824. He had his first successes as a painter in Vienna and took part in his first exhibition in 1826. From 1826 to 1830 he lived in Eisenstadt , from 1830 to 1834 again in Vienna. Here he painted Hungarian landscapes for Baron Geymüller. In 1834 Markó went to Rome , where he formed friendly relations with Joseph Anton Koch and Bertel Thorvaldsen , found artistic recognition and received commissions from the Austrian and Italian aristocracy. In 1838 he went to Pisa and from there took part in an architectural competition for the Budapest Parliament. In 1840 he became professor at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. From 1847 he finally lived in seclusion in the Villa Appeggi and made only a few trips. Markó was also a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

The artist's son, Károly Markó the Younger (1822-1891), was also a landscape painter who worked mostly in Vienna, but did not match his father's talent.

Works

Károly Markó began as a portrait painter, but soon turned to landscape painting, which he often enriched with biblical or mythological subjects. He drew on the painting tradition of the 17th century, especially Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin . His landscapes are always idealizing. He is one of the best landscape painters of his time.
