Károly Reich (born August 8, 1922 in Balatonszemes , small area Balatonföldvár , † September 7, 1988 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian illustrator.

Life

Károly Reich came from a poor family. After six years of elementary school, she did a commercial apprenticeship at the local cooperative branch. He was transferred to Budapest and from then on worked in an advertising department. The company delegated him to the college of applied arts to study workers . He completed his studies in 1948. Since 1950 he worked as a freelance artist. He had his first solo exhibition in 1964. With ink, pencil and chalk drawings, watercolor paintings and pastel pictures, he illustrated over 300 books, mainly of children's and youth literature, including works by Elek Benedek , Ferenc Molnár , Magda Donászy , Ágnes Bálint and István Fekete . The eight-part film series Vackor az elsö bében produced in 1985 is based on Reich's world of images.

Later on , Reich also made small sculptures , which were exhibited for the first time in 1987. He received the Munkácsy Prize in 1955 and the Kossuth Prize in 1963 . Reich described his activity as a craft, but rejected the term artist for himself.

The Hungarian Post brought in 2010 two European stamps out with a bear of empire. An exhibition has been set up at his birthplace, Balatonszemes.
