Käthe Schulken (born July 19, 1891 in Vegesack , † July 10, 1974 in Gatersleben ) was a German educator , poet and local writer.

Life

Käthe or Kaethe Schulken was born in Vegesack near Bremen as the daughter of the ship's captain Claus Schulken (1847-1893) and his wife Catharine Spille (1852-1935) and was baptized as a Protestant in the name of Catherine Adelheid. She attended the Lyceum in her hometown and passed the teacher examination in 1911. The school service brought her to Quedlinburg , from where she got to know and love the Harz and the Harz foreland. From 1923 to 1958 she was the head of the school administration in Gatersleben (today the city of Seeland in the Salzland district, Saxony-Anhalt). As a fan of the hiking birds , she began to publish hiking songs and poems in 1920, which mainly describe the natural beauties of the Harz, which became her adopted home, as well as the Weser Uplands . She particularly appreciated the traditional walks with her friends and students on Walpurgis Night on the Brocken . That is why “Fräulein” Schulken was affectionately known as the “Brocken witch”. She died unmarried and without children.
