The Queen Luise Memorial Church in Kaliningrad , the former Koenigsberg , is a former Evangelical Lutheran church which today houses the puppet theater of the Kaliningrad Oblast.

history

The church was built in honor of the Prussian Queen Luise . It was the first church outside the Königsberger Wallring and the first church of several that was built on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Kingdom of Prussia . The community came from the villa suburbs of Hufen and Amalienau . The building land and half of the construction costs were provided by the councilor Louis Großkopf and his wife Helene nee. Winkler . Further donors were Walter Simon , Fritz Heumann and A. Siebert. The planning of the neo-Romanesque church was in the hands of the architect Friedrich Heitmann . The church was built from 1899 to 1901. Site manager was Richard Saran . The company Gustav Kuntzsch , Wernigerode , created the pulpit and the organ prospectus for the organ built by master organ builder Bruno Goebel (1860–1935), owner of the Max Terletzki (1834–1903) Nachf., Königsberg organ . On September 9, 1901, the church was  inaugurated in the presence of the imperial couple -  Wilhelm II and Auguste Viktoria of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg . The sermon was given by Dr. Otto Lackner (1872-1945). He was the long-time pastor of this parish for Hufen and Amalienau. Second pastor was Wilhelm Grigull.

The air raids on Königsberg and the battle for Königsberg damaged the church. The ruin stood for a long time without notice. It was scheduled for demolition in the 1960s, but the architect Yuri Vaganov prevented it by developing a project to convert the church into a puppet theater. Inside, between 1968 and 1970, a false ceiling was installed in place of the galleries to create a theater room with a stage for puppet shows. The renovation was completed in 1976.
