Körkwitz is a district of the town of Ribnitz-Damgarten in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen in the north of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

location

The place is about 600 meters northwest of the outskirts of Ribnitz-Damgarten on the Saaler Bodden. The Körkwitzer Bach, which runs to the south, flows into this. To the west is the Bernsteinsee , on which a water ski system has been installed, and the smaller mixed forest area Deckbusch . The terrain height of the place drops from about five meters to the bay and the stream to sea level. District road 1 leads through the village from Dierhagen to Ribnitz-Damgarten.

history

The place arose in the course of the German expansion to the east and was first mentioned on December 27, 1257 as Wendisch Curckeuitz and Teutsch Curkeuitz. The name comes from Old Slavonic and could have been derived from kruku (raven, rooster or jug) or from a personal name. The village was owned by Rudolf I and from 1274 belonged to Waldemar von Rostock . Belonging to the town of Ribnitz from 1311, it was partially acquired by the Ribnitz monastery in 1323 . Before 1385, the Körkwitz estate was owned by the von Zepelin family as a pledge . In 1393 the place came completely into the hands of the Ribnitz monastery through rent purchase. With the secularization in Mecklenburg, the village belonged to the state estates from 1599 . Destruction and looting during the Thirty Years' War also resulted in famine and disease outbreaks in Körkwitz. The Northern War , the coalition and liberation wars and the associated troop movements and billeting had a negative impact on population development and the economy.

In 1929 the town was incorporated into Ribnitz.

economy

For centuries agriculture and fishing played a dominant role in Körkwitz. On December 20, 1786, a fishing company, which existed until 1828, was founded, which fished the Ribnitzer See and Saaler Bodden with Zeesbooten , gill nets and fish traps . In January 1874 a gravel pit was dug in the mixed forest area Deckbusch . With the freedom of trade in Mecklenburg in 1868, some craftsmen settled in Körkwitz. Towards the end of the 19th century, tourism with room rental developed and at the height of sailing ships, residents of the village also went to sea. In 1906 the Kurhaus Tannenheim was opened as a rest home for Berlin children. The establishment of a Walther Bachmann aircraft manufacturing plant in 1935 brought a significant economic upswing .

After the Second World War , a children's home was set up in 1945 in the villa of the manufacturer Bachmann. Today the renovated and redesigned building complex accommodates vacationers. In 1960 the LPG Richard Wossidlo was founded in Körkwitz , which was merged with LPG Treue in Klockenhagen in 1970. The Ribnitz fiberboard factory was an important economic factor. Today a sewage treatment plant is in operation to the northwest of the residential area. A solar system was built to the southwest .

Richard Wossidlo

Körkwitz was often the residence of Richard Wossidlo . His uncle Hermann Burmeister, a brother-in-law of his mother, was a tenant here. In Körkwitz, Wossidlo is said to have come into contact with the folk wisdom and customs of the common people for the first time, which had a lasting impact on the life of the important folklorist.

To commemorate the work of Wossidlo, a linden tree was planted in the village and a memorial stone was erected.

Körkwitz Hof

The Körkwitz Hof, located about 2 km northwest of Körkwitz, has been part of the Dierhagen community since 1965. The town had belonged to the town of Ribnitz since at least 1311 and was used by a leaseholder in the 19th century. On December 1, 1910, 56 people lived here. A memorial stone placed on the Boddenwanderweg in Deckbusch commemorates the last leaseholder, Albrecht Mumm, who fell in World War I. Since 1976, the Bäderstraße leading from Altheide to Fischland-Darß-Zingst has divided the property, which originally consisted of a residential building, farm buildings and a park. World icon
