The KStV Winfridia is the oldest Catholic association in Göttingen. It was founded on February 2, 1870 and unites students and former students of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen.
history
On January 13, 1870, nine students from Georgia Augusta decided to found a KV corporation in Göttingen . It was decided to use the name Winfridia, after Boniface, the patron saint of the Germans. On February 2nd, 1870 Winfridia was founded. Winfridia's motto is “In fide, virtus et amicitia!” However, due to the Franco-German War , the still young Winfridia's club life was shut down on July 19, 1870 and only resumed on May 10, 1871. In 1877 Hermann Iseke composed the Winfriden's federal song "The night of error lay on our districts". A year later the flag was consecrated by Bishop Wilhelm Sommerwerk of Hildesheim . In 1880, ten years after it was founded, Winfridia got its coat of arms. The coat of arms shows: The ax with which Bonifatius felled the Donar oak, the oak itself, the colors (light blue, white, red), the Lower Saxony horse and the Winfriden circle.
In January 1914, Winfridia was chosen as the suburb of the KV. During the war, the association was able to continue operating with a few federal brothers. When the war ended in 1918, club life went back to normal.
In 1938, the Nazi government declared the association to be subversive and banned it due to its free, democratic outlook. The property of Winfridia was then transferred to the member Prof. August Lütkemeyer for the house building association Winfridenhaus Essen to protect against confiscation. Since a large part of the Couleurgut of Winfridia was lost in the turmoil of the war years and the post-war period, the women's gauze donated a new flag in 1950, which was consecrated by Bishop Joseph Godehard Machens of Hildesheim.
The fraternity house
At the turn of the century, the decision was made to build a house at Nikolausberger Weg 17. The foundation stone was laid in 1906. In the summer semester of 1910, a monument to Hermann Iseke was erected in the front garden. In 1929 the Kneipsaal was added to give the steadily growing community a place for their celebrations. At the 66th foundation festival in 1936, the house was sold to the university to protect it from confiscation by the Nazi government. In 1954 the university returned the house, which had been sold in 1936, to Winfridia. In 1970 the University of Göttingen decided to enlarge the campus due to the steadily increasing number of students. The Winfridenhaus stood in the way of this project, so the house was sold back to the university. Since the funding was not secured, the house was not demolished; part of the university administration is now located in it. Winfridia then bought the vacant house of the Germania fraternity in Otto-Wallach-Weg 12.
Circle
The circle is led by the full members, the boys and old men as well as the trial members, the foxes of Winfridia, behind the name.
In the circle of Winfridia there is a capital W for Winfridia, as well as the letters v, c and f. Together with the exclamation mark, these initials stand for the wish "vivat, crescat, floreat Winfridia!"
