A boat lift house is a descent structure as an older form of the boat lift . In canals that had to overcome differences in height in the landscape, barge hoists with pulleys and trolleys were used to raise or lower the barges from one level to another, which was done with muscle power.

In Germany you can find the remains of two boat lifts: the Halsbrücke boat lift on the Freiberger Mulde (sometimes also called the Rothenfurther Kahn lift house) in the course of the Churprinzer Bergwerkskanal , built in 1788/89, and the Großvoigtsberg boat lift house (sometimes also called the Christbescherunger Kahn lift house), also in the Near Freiberg , which was supposed to overcome the difference in altitude between a weir pond in the Mulde and the Christbescherunger mine canal (built in 1791). The master builder was the Freiberg art master and later machine director Johann Friedrich Mende (1743–1798).

The remains of both houses, which have been lovingly restored and preserved for posterity, can still be seen today.

The restoration of the house in Halsbrücke was carried out in 1988 by the Feierabend Brigade VEB (B) Bergsicherung Schneeberg, while the house in Großvoigtsberg as part of a job creation measure (ABM) in 1998/99 by the Institute for the Promotion of Environmental Protection eV, Freiberg NL , has been restored.

A third boat lift house was also planned, which was to be built near Kleinvoigtsberg , today a district of Großschirma , but was never built.
