Kailzie House was a mansion in the Scottish Council Area Scottish Borders . It was located about three kilometers southeast of the small town of Peebles on the right bank of the Tweed . Although Kailzie House has since been demolished, various outbuildings have been preserved and protected as monuments of the A, B and C categories. The entire property is also listed in the Scottish Landscaping Register . The highest rating “outstanding” was awarded in two out of seven categories.

history

In 1326 the Scottish King David II transferred the lands of Kailzie to James of Tweedie . Over the centuries, the family built a defense tower there . In 1638 Kailzie belonged to the lands of the Earl of Traquair . In the centuries that followed, Kailzie saw numerous owners. The Balfours , who erected a new building at the site, and the Plenderleiths , who initiated the development of the gardens and parks, deserve special mention. In 1794 the Glasgow merchant Nutter Campbell bought the property. In 1803 he had the Georgian Kailzie House built after a fire . The manor house was demolished in 1962 for economic reasons.

Pigeon house

There is a pigeon house in the gardens . Built in 1698, it was built before the last mansion. The pigeon house has a base area of ​​5 m × 3.7 m. Its roughly 60 cm thick masonry consists of quarry stone with natural stone details . The two-story building closes with a slate pent roof . Originally a wooden structure with two rows with nine entry holes each was inserted into the roof. The wooden nest boxes inside have meanwhile been removed. As the only building on the property, the pigeon house is classified as a monument of the highest monument category A.
