Kaingaroa Harbor is a natural harbor on the Chatham Islands , which are part of New Zealand .

The Kaingaroa Harbor is located at the northeastern end of Chatham Iceland , the main island of the Chatham Islands . The natural harbor, which is open to the north, has an area of ​​around 1.22 km × 0.76 km, with a coastline of 2.44 km.

The only small settlement on the banks of Waikawa Harbor is Kaingaroa and is located on its west side, near the fish factory to the north of it. This has the only jetty in the northeastern part of the island.

history

According to tradition, the ancestors of the Moriori (natives of Chatham Island ) landed with the Ko ro waka a Kahu , the Kahu's canoe in the bay of Kaingaroa Harbor , where he planted his fern and named the place Tongariro . The place is said to have been destroyed when the Māori arrived in 1836.
