Cairo-Dakar Highway
The Cairo-Dakar Highway is a section of the Trans-African Highway (TAH) 1 in the international highway network developed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) , the African Development Bank (ADB) and the African Union . Most of the highway between Tripoli and Nouakchott was built under the direction of the Arab Maghreb Union .
location
The Cairo-Dakar Highway has a length of 8,636 km and runs along the Mediterranean coast of North Africa and then further along the Atlantic coast of Northwest Africa. Most of the route is paved. In 2005, the last major section between Nouakchott and Nouadhibou in Mauritania was completed, only a 4 km long section is missing in the no man's land between the border post of the Western Sahara controlled by Morocco and the Mauritanian border, where there is only one lane in the desert. The trunk road is connected to the Dakar-Lagos Highway (TAH 7) and thus forms a north-south connection between Rabat and Monrovia through the Sahara along the west coast of the continent.
The border between Morocco and Algeria has been completely closed since 1994, so that the entire length of the Cairo-Dakar Highway is not passable.
route
Only the larger cities were considered, which are almost directly on the highway, the table starts from Cairo and ends in Dakar.
