history

Autumn view from the Kaiserberg

As a strategically important site, the Kaiserberg has been the site of various fortifications since prehistoric times (see Kaiserberg Castle ). In the earliest Middle Ages, the Kaiserberg marked a point on the border between the Merovingian empire of the Franks and that of the Saxons .

To the north of Duissern-Strasse, until it was demolished after the Second World War, the remainder of the medieval Duissern Motte lay , which at last could only be seen in the landscape as a 1.5 m high hill with a diameter of about 25 m.

In the middle of the 12th century, Duissern's Cistercian monastery is said to have been relocated to the Marienborn near the Sedanwiese for several years. The name of the sunken monastery used to this day for the region of the stream below the Sedan meadow is evidence of this to this day.

The Kaiserberg has belonged to Duisburg since 1868. With a council resolution of February 22, 1881, the mountain originally called “Duissernscher Berg” was renamed “Kaiserberg”.

The northern foothills are called "Schnabelhuck". This was separated from the Duissernschen Berg during the construction of the Duisburg – Oberhausen railway line by the Cologne-Minden Railway Company in 1846. The remaining piece, called "Sauerbraten" by the Duisburgers, disappeared during the construction of the Reichsautobahn in 1936, today's Federal Motorway 3 .

The Kaiserberg today

Today the Kaiserberg is a hill with old trees and hiking trails, which forms part of the large Duisburg city forest .

The Duisburg Zoo has been located on parts of the Kaiserberg since 1934 .

To commemorate the Battle of Sedan, there is a “Sedan meadow” on the Kaiserberg, where events took place on Sedan Day at the beginning of the 20th century. A previously existing water tower, a waterfall and the Kaiser Wilhelm I monument no longer exist on the Kaiserberg. The Duissern Botanical Garden , which was first mentioned in 1890, is located in the western area . At the moment (2019) the Duisserner Citizens Association is making efforts to restore and redesign the Kaiserberg. Entry in the list of historical monuments is also sought.

On the edge of the Kaiserberg, d. H. in the eastern parts of Duissern, the most distinguished residential areas of the city with a villa-like development are located.

In 2018, the Wilhelmshöhe district was completed on the immediate edge of the Kaiserberg (with a retaining wall facing the Kaiserberg) . This is located on a 6300 square meter area of the listed former villa of the Henle family and comprises around 45 residential units in seven city villas. Subsequently, by the end of 2020, the Kaiserpalais will be another residential quarter with high-quality furnishings.

In table tennis , the women's team of the DTC Kaiserberg (today: DSC Kaiserberg ) was one of the strongest teams in Germany from 1957 to 1989.
