The Imperial Ancestral Temple ( 太庙 , Tàimiào , also called 明堂 , Míngtáng ) is a historical site from the time of the Ming and Qing dynasties in Beijing . It is located east of the Tian'anmen Tower. The emperors sacrificed their ancestors in the temple. The facility comprised the front, middle and back halls as well as additional side halls on both sides. In 1924 it became Heping Park (Heping gongyuan). The Beijing Palace of Culture of the Working People has been located there since 1950 .

The imperial ancestral temple has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (3-80) since 1988 .
