Kaiserstraße (Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate)

The Route Nationale 3

The Kaiser Street is the former section of the national highway 40 between Mainz and Saarbruecken .

The name of the street comes from the fact that under the French Emperor Napoleon the street between the capital Paris and the administrative seat of the department of Mont-Tonnerre , Mainz, was expanded into the Grande Route Imperiale from 1806 . On a 35-kilometer section it has this name almost continuously in all localities, elsewhere the street, especially in Mainz and the neighboring towns to Wörrstadt , is called “Pariser Straße”, more often also “Mainzer Straße” or “Saarbrücker Straße”. In France, it was the Route nationale 3 on the entire section between Paris- Porte de Pantin and Goldener Bremm (Breme d'Or) from the Napoleonic period until a few decades ago .

Especially through Lorraine and Rheinhessen , the road does not follow the shape of the terrain, but leads in a straight line from one place to the next.

When the later Reichsstraße were numbered in 1932 , Fernverkehrsstraße 40, from 1934 Reichsstraße 40, which continued from Mainz to Fulda, was still one of the most important German traffic arteries. After the construction of the motorways, almost all sections of this former main artery were downgraded to state roads.

Today the Saarland part forms the Saarland state road 119 from the roundabout at the Roman fort in Saarbrücken , in Rhineland-Palatinate the Kaiserstraße mainly belongs to the state roads 395 (west of Kaiserslautern - Eselsfürth ) and 401 . Parts also belong to federal highways like Bundesstraße 37 in Kaiserslautern or have been graded into district or municipal roads after being re-routed.
