The lime kiln in Bremerhaven - Lehe , Bütteler Strasse 6 is one of the very few technical facilities of this type still preserved in Germany.
The lime kiln was placed under monument protection in 1973 .

history

The lime kilns were built in 1850 and remained in operation until 1870. The ongoing construction activity in the then independent municipalities of Lehe and Bremerhaven led to a great demand for lime mortar . Inland, lime kilns were put into operation near limestone quarries . Here, on the coast, the shell limestone from the mouth of the Weser served as raw material. During the summer months, the fishermen dug the mussels and snails out of the then dry sands at low tide , cleaned them in the creeks , filled them into baskets and transported them to Lehe with shallow boats. Preferably were wicker , mussels and cockles suitable for burning.

The wall thickness of the walls of the ovens was almost half a meter, which were additionally secured by iron bands. In the lime kiln, the fire chief layered alternating layers with peat from Wehden and Hymendorf as well as the mussels. In the central draft shaft, charcoal ignited the layers of peat. The burning heat was around 1000 degrees. After a three-day fire, the white lime powder could be removed and processed into a lime paste with water in the lime house. Up to four ovens were in operation at times.

The burning of shell limestone and the nearby Bremen harbor were thus directly related. The ovens were taken out of service in 1870 when the general use of hard lime, natural and then Portland cement in the construction industry had become popular. The building was completely preserved and is an important technical monument.

For several decades since 1895, storks built their nests on the buildings.

A few meters away, archaeologists discovered the remains of a stable house from the Iron Age during excavations in May 2019 at a depth of 1.2 meters . In addition to other confirmed findings , such as storage pits and ceramic shards , a well from the last century BC First traces of settlement. For decades, the swimming pool of the sauna at the lime kiln was located above the site.
