Calvary Maria Bühel
The Maria Bühel Calvary in Oberndorf near Salzburg is a monumental staircase from the first half of the 18th century. The facility in the Altach district is in the extension of the Europasteg over the Salzach on the way from Laufen an der Salzach to the Maria Bühel pilgrimage church . The Kalvarienberg is a listed building .
Building description
At the beginning of the stairs on the river bank there is a statue of St. John Nepomuk by the sculptor Josef Anton Pfaffinger on a pedestal with the coat of arms of Archbishop Franz Anton von Harrach with the year 1720.
The stone staircase with its four steps overcomes the deepening of the Salzach into the terrain to an extent of 29 meters. It originally had 150 steps, which was modeled on the 15 secrets of the rosary . Under the first landing there is a niche with a semicircular end with a baroque fountain from 1720.
On the hill at the top of the staircase there is an exedra with pilasters and a final cornice, built by the Salzburg court architect Sebastian Stumpfegger . It contains a crucifixion group with Mary and John from 1721.
