Josef Anton Pfaffinger
Josef Anton Pfaffinger (born January 19, 1684 in Laufen ; † August 3, 1758 in Salzburg ) was a sculptor.
Life
Pfaffinger's place of birth belonged to the Prince Archbishopric of Salzburg and is now in Upper Bavaria . His father also practiced the same handicrafts, but mainly worked in wood. His brother was in Graz active silversmith Franz Xaver Pfaffinger . Working as a journeyman in Kremsmünster , he came to Salzburg in 1716, where he worked until his death. In 1718 Pfaffinger received the city's civil rights. During his further work he was considered the most famous and most talented sculptor in the state of Salzburg. Many of his works are based on well-known older models of other artists and vary them. Especially the works of his father-in-law Bernhard Michael Mandl were often role models.
Often his work impresses with its high expressiveness and liveliness, but in many cases his work is also characterized by stage-like theatrics and sentimentality. It is not uncommon for this to show an increasing loss of originality.
Works
Pfaffinger designed the figure of Saint Nepomuk , which was popular at the time and which he performed in many variations, particularly frequently . The figures are in Salzburg on the Salzach near the Sisters of Mercy, on the Nepomuk Bridge in Maxglan , near the Leopoldskroner Weiher and in Sankt Jakob am Thurn , furthermore the crucifixion group by the stairs to the pilgrimage church Maria Bühel from the Europasteg (bridge from Laufen to Oberndorf-Altach over the Salzach). He designed the Neptune group of Kapitelschwemme essentially based on the motifs of Georg Raphael Donner . The Nepomuk statue at the Leopoldskroner Weiher takes Mandel's Philippus Benitus as a model and the Petersbrunnen in the priest's house next to the Trinity Church is also made according to Mandl's motifs. The portal of the Sebastian Church is designed according to Franz Anton Danreiter . Well-known works by Pfaffinger are also St. Florian of the fountain on the Old Market and many figures from the Calvary chapels on the Kapuzinerberg (on the way to the monastery there). Pfaffinger died in great honor on August 3, 1758 in Salzburg.
