Kam Fong Chun (born May 27, 1918 in Honolulu , Hawaii , † October 18, 2002 ) was an American actor .

Life

Kam Fong Chun, later also just called Kam Fong in the credits of films, worked at the Pearl Harbor shipyard after completing his training at McKinley High School in Honolulu. He survived the attack by the Japanese armed forces in 1941 on a dry deck. In 1944, his wife and children died on the ground when two US Air Force aircraft collided over Honolulu and crashed into the ground. However, Fong remarried and joined the police department in his hometown, where he served for 18 years.

After a few minor film roles, he took part in a casting at the end of the 1960s, which occupied the supporting roles of the newly to be produced series Hawaii Five-Zero . Fong actually auditioned for the role of serial villain Wo Fat , but was hired for the even more important role of Detective Chin Ho Kelly .

He played this role for a total of ten years, mostly behind the characters Danny Williams ( James MacArthur ) and Steve McGarrett ( Jack Lord ) in the background. Nonetheless, its role was of great importance for the stability and longevity of the show, which was considered to be the longest police series in the world until its end of production. In China, Fong was even more popular than the lead actor Lord.

After leaving the show in 1978, he played in various television productions and series such as Magnum (television series) . In a (filmed but unpublished) remake film by Hawaii Five-Zero , he took his old role again, even though he died a series death after 10 seasons.

One of his sons, Dennis Chun , played in the series remake of Hawaii Five-0 to Sergeant Duke Lukela that in the original series, however, by Herman Wedemeyer was shown and not from Fong.
