The Nebelmann (original title La ragazza nella nebbia ; German: Das Mädchen im Nebel ) is an Italian crime film from 2017. Directed by Donato Carrisi , who also wrote the novel of the same name and the script. He made his directorial debut with it.

After a car accident in the mountains, special investigator Vogel is examined and questioned by the psychiatrist Flores. Flashbacks then tell the story of a kidnapping, for the investigation of which Vogel is sent to the remote mountain village in the Alps and has to work more or less well with the local police.
Sixteen-year-old Anna Lou disappeared without a trace on her way to church. Special investigator Vogel leads the following investigation, in which, as always in his investigations, he also massively involves the media. He hopes that the kidnapper (or even the murderer) will get nervous and make mistakes. At his side is a particularly committed journalist, whose intentions are less aimed at helping and are exclusively selfish. Vogel and his sometimes dubious methods themselves also become the focus of journalistic curiosity.
A white SUV often appears in amateur videos made by a teenage admirer Anna Lous. This belongs without a doubt to the popular literature professor Loris Martini, who lives with his family in the village. There is always more evidence to relate him to the case. It turns out that he deliberately circulated these himself in order to initially draw suspicion on himself, but which were deliberately never convincing enough to convict him. He wanted to induce Vogel to forge some additional evidence against him so that the vague suspicion could finally become a certainty, which he succeeded. But then Martini directs suspicion to a serial killer who was up to mischief in the area 30 years ago and - in the German version - was called the "Nebelmann". The media informed by Martini convict Vogel and exonerate the professor. During a scheduled TV talk show, where the professor and Vogel and the investigative journalist were supposed to meet, while waiting behind the scenes, Vogel discovers real evidence of Martini's perpetration on Martini's wrist. Now he decides to take justice into his own hands, lures Martini into his car and murders him. This scene is not shown, but the previous scene in which Martini kills Anna Lou with poison.
When the conversation with psychiatrist Flores is over, he asks the waiting police in, who arrest Vogel.
Flores returns home, pensively opens a well-hidden box and delights in six strands of red hair, which makes it clear that Flores is the “fog man”, the serial offender who was active 30 years ago.

The film was shot in South Tyrol. In the first two weeks of the program, the film generated 3.3 million euros at the Italian box office. Another five million euros were added to worldwide sales.
criticism
The film service awarded three out of five possible stars and judged that the film, with "different storylines, perspectives and ever new suspicions, unfolds a sophisticated game of wrong tracks", in which, in addition to the investigation of the crime, the relationship between the police and the media is an issue will.
The critic of the Märkische Oderzeitung was less satisfied. The film is actually “a well-made and dense thriller” if it had been “only half an hour shorter.” In addition, the director “over-turns the tension screw towards the end”, because the perpetrator “might fit, but then it works pulled by the hair. "

Donato Carrisi won the David di Donatello Award for Best Young Director in 2018 (Migliore Regista Esordiente). At the Globo d'Oro 2018 Toni Servillo won the award for best actor (Migliore Attore) and Donato Carrisi the award for best screenplay (Migliore Sceneggiatura).
