Kambochora ( Greek Καμπόχωρα ) was a municipality in the prefecture of Chios on the Greek island of Chios from 1989 to 2010 . With 950 inhabitants (as of 2001) Chalkios was the seat of the local government.

location

The municipality is located in the southern part of the island and is the only municipality without direct access to the sea. The area of the municipality rises slowly from Agios Minas in the southeast to the northwest. In the east, Mount Korakaris (Κορακάρης) forms the border with the city of Chios . A hill country forms the transition to the municipal districts of Ionia in the south and Mastichochoria in the southwest. Omiroupoli borders on the southern foothills of the Provatas (Προβατάς) in the northwest (707 m, Kakia Rachi ; Κακιά Ράχη) and in the north .

Administrative division

Through the merger of the previously independent rural communities of Chalkios, Vavili, Vasileoniko, Ververato, Dafnonas and Zyfias, the municipality of Kambochora was created in 1989. With the administrative reform in 2010 , the municipalities of the island were merged to form the municipality of Chios on January 1, 2011. Since then, Kambochora has been one of eight municipal districts. The former seven municipal districts form a city district and six local communities. The population figures are from the 2011 census.

Chalkios

With 950 inhabitants, Chalkios (Χαλκειός ( n. Sg. )) Is the largest town in the municipality and the administrative center. Chalkios is located in the plain south of Mount Korakaris (Κορακάρης) and 6 km southwest of Chios. At the entrance to Chalkios, the local folklore museum is housed in a former olive mill.

Vasileoniko

The village of Vasileoniko (Βασιλεώνοικο ( n. Sg. )) Is about 1 km east of Chalkios. The place name means home of the king, because a king resided in the area in ancient times.

Vavili

Vavili also Vavyli (Βαβίλοι ( m. Pl. ) Or Βαβύλοι) is located in the south of the municipality about 2 km south of Chalkios in the immediate vicinity of the road that connects Chios with Mesta. In the small Byzantine museum of the village, in addition to church objects, pictures of the Panagia Krina church, which is about 2.5 km to the west, are exhibited. Mastic is produced in Vavili .

The Byzantine church Panagia Krina (Παναγία Κρήνα) is located a few km east of the village. In the early 13th century the church, which is reminiscent of a miniature of the main church of the monastery Nea Moni , was built with a parish room and anteroom (esonarthex) . The interior was lavishly decorated with wall paintings. Up to five superimposed painting layers could be determined. In the 18th century, another vestibule (exonarthex) was added outside the church. Large parts of the church were destroyed in the earthquake in 1881. The frescoes have been restored since the early 1980s. The results of this work are the frescoes from the 14th century that are exhibited in the Giustiniani Palace in the fortress of Chios. More recent wall paintings from 1734 are on display in the Byzantine Museum of Chios.

Agios Georgios Sykousis

The village of Agios Georgios Sykousis (Άγιος Γεώργιος Συκούσης ( m. Sg. )) Is about 360 m above sea level and is therefore the highest place in the municipality. To the east the terrain slopes down to the plain of Kambos. Therefore, the view extends over the municipality to the coast of Asia Minor and to the island of Samos in the southeast. The village is on the road from the town of Chios, 11 km away, to the southwest of the island.

Zyfias

The village of Zyfias (Ζυφιάς ( m. Sg. )) Is located 2 km west of Chalkios and, with an area of 1.90 km², is also the smallest village (Τοπική Κοινότητα Ζυφιά).

Ververato

The place Ververato (Βερβεράτο ( n. Sg. )) Is 1 km west of Chalkios.

Dafnonas

The village of Dafnonas is located in the north of the municipality at the foot of the mountain "Kakia Skala" ("bad steps", Κακιά Σκάλα) a southeastern branch of the "Provatas" (Προβατάς) at about 200 m altitude, 2 km northwest of Chalkios. To the east is the mountain "Korakaris" (Κορακάρης), behind it the town of Chios about 10 km away. Due to the elevated location, the view extends to the east and south-east over a large part of the municipal area and over the sea to the coast of Asia Minor. The place name is derived from the laurel bushes (Dafnes, Δάφνες) that were once abundant in the area. The original settlement of Dafnonas was at Kanavoutsata near ancient Petrana. At the beginning of the 11th century, the place was built in its current location. The medieval ruins of Kanavoutsato, Stratigato and Vestarchato are in the vicinity of the village and were formerly inhabited by Genoese .

economy

The income from the cultivation of citrus fruits (mainly lemons) and almonds contribute to the income of the population, olives for oil production and horticulture are mainly grown for self-sufficiency. Vavili is one of the mastic producing places.
