history

The south of Chios has always been one of the most densely populated parts of the island due to its fertile soil. Of the 19 prehistoric sites known to date, 9 are in the area of the municipality. Emborio on the southeast coast was settled from the Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age, another 6 Early Bronze Age sites are known. The site of Kato Phana is dated to the Mycenaean period .

As a result of raids by Arab pirates, the coastal towns were abandoned from the 7th century onwards and, in the interior of the island, especially the prosperous villages from mastic production were increasingly fortified. During the Genoese period between the 14th and 16th centuries, these villages flourished and their population increased.

Mastic from Mastichochoria

The trade in mastic brought Chioten to great influence and provided great privileges. Among other things, the inhabitants of the Mastichochoria were spared the 1822 massacre of Chios , so that the mastic supplies for the sultan and his harem would not be endangered. In 2012 the mastichochoria and especially the mastic stocks were threatened by a forest fire .
