The dike row settlement Kanalpolder belongs to the Dollart district in the municipality of Bunde in the East Frisian Rheiderland . A small part is located in the northern municipality of Jemgum . The polders in the Rheiderland came to an end in 1877 with the Kanalpolder.

The elongated area of ​​Kanalpolder borders directly on the Dollart Bay to the east and Heinitzpolder to the west . The polder is protected from flooding by a dike . The entire place was created through land reclamation and lies on fertile marshland . A sewer serves as a drainage channel for the low-lying land.

history

Heinitzpolder was diked in 1795. The further land reclamation measures from the so-called growth of the dyke foreland progressed only slowly. The embankment of the new polder did not begin until 1874. In a storm surge in January 1877, 35 Italian workers working here died. The dike work was completed in 1877 and the canal polder was now directly adjacent to the Dollart. At the instigation of the socially committed pastor Arnold Wilhelm Nordbeck from Landschaftspolder , farm workers' settlements were built there in 1922. The entire residential area of ​​the so-called “Aalande” covers 38.1 hectares and also extends into the area of ​​the Landschaftspolder and Heinitzpolder. With the newly won strip of land, the dike in the Rheiderland came to an end.

During the French rule, the area belonged to the Dutch department of Ems-Occidental from 1807 . In 1815 the area was added to the Kingdom of Hanover and in 1866 to Prussia. In 1966, the Dollart community was founded; it lost its independence in 1973 and was incorporated into the Bunde community. Kanalpolder has been part of the Bunde community since 2001.
