Kangaroo Ground is a village in the local administrative area of Nillumbik Shire and belongs to the Australian state of Victoria . The settlement, 26 km northeast of Melbourne , is located in the Yarra River Valley between the towns of Eltham and Yarra Glen, and had 1,095 inhabitants in 2016.

Infrastructure

The Kangaroo Ground Pioneer Cemetery was established in 1851 and is the oldest European burial ground in the Yarra Valley. The place has a primary school, which houses the Andrew Ross Museum. The post office is also allowed to sell wines - unique in Australia. The settlement has a Presbyterian church and general store. There is a tennis and riding club in the sports area. There is also a restaurant.

The Aboriginesstamm the Wurundjeri lived the Europeans in the area around Kangaroo Ground before arrival.

In 1839 some families from Scotland settled. Her crossing from Europe was on the ship David Clark . The settlers initially acquired an average of 150 acres of land in order to farm on the fertile soil. In 1854, a few miles east of the village, Stringy-bark Forest Gold was discovered in the eucalyptus forest . In 1871 the settlement became the seat of the Shire of Eltham administrative unit. A newspaper was founded in 1873.

The international, linguistic non-governmental organization SIL International has its Australian office in Kangaroo Ground.

In the Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Park there is a tower in memory of the soldiers who died in Europe during the First World War . On November 11, 2005, a young pine was planted in front of the tower . Their seeds come from a pine that grows on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey . A battle took place there during the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915 , in which a great many Australians were killed. The tower has a height of 12 meters and is the highest point in the near and far area. There is a viewing platform at the top.

The tower also serves as a fire watchtower for the discovery of bush fires .
