The canton of Alota is a municipality in the Potosí department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The Cantón Alota is one of four cantons in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) San Agustín in the province of Enrique Baldivieso . It borders in the north on the canton of San Agustín , in the east and west on the province of Nor Lípez , and in the south on the canton of Cerro Gordo .

The canton extends between about 21 ° 14 'and 21 ° 25' south latitude and 67 ° 25 'and 67 ° 42' west longitude, it measures from north to south up to 15 kilometers, from west to east up to 30 kilometers. There are four municipalities in the canton, the central place is Alota in the southwestern part of the canton with 515 inhabitants ( 2001 census ). The mean altitude of the canton is 3900  m .

The canton of Alota is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andean mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera de Lípez in the southeast.

The mean average temperature of the region is just under 8 ° C, the annual precipitation is only 70 mm (see climate diagram Avaroa).
