The canton of San Agustín is a municipality in the Potosí department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The Cantón San Agustín is one of four cantons in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) San Agustín in the province of Enrique Baldivieso . It borders on the province of Nor Lípez to the north, east and west and the canton of Alota to the south .

The canton extends between about 21 ° 04 'and 21 ° 19' south latitude and 67 ° 30 'and 67 ° 48' west longitude, it measures up to 25 kilometers from north to south and up to 30 kilometers from west to east. There are five municipalities in the canton, the central place is San Agustín in the northern part of the canton with 533 inhabitants ( 2001 census ). The mean altitude of the canton is 4000  m .

The canton of San Agustín is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andean mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera de Lípez in the southeast.

The mean average temperature of the region is just under 8 ° C, the annual precipitation is only 70 mm (see climate diagram Avaroa). The region has a distinctive daytime climate, the monthly average temperatures fluctuate only insignificantly between 4 ° C in June / July and 10 ° C from December to February. Significant monthly precipitation of 30 mm per month only falls in the months of January and February, the rest of the year is almost free of precipitation.

The literacy rate among those over 19 is 85 percent, 97 percent for men and 76 percent for women. The most important idiom with a share of 96 percent is Quechua , 86 percent of the population speak Spanish . 95 percent of the population are Catholic, 2 percent Protestant.

99.7 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 99 percent live without sanitary facilities.

Some of the women work as migrant workers in northern Chile , but for some years the population has been receiving an additional income from collecting wild herbs as part of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) development program.
