Alsace wine region

The Kanzlerberg is a vineyard in Alsace . The Kanzlerberg has been part of the Alsace Grand Cru appellation since November 23, 1983 , making it one of the 50 potentially best locations in Alsace. A total of 3.23 hectares of vineyards were approved. This makes this location the smallest of the Alsace Grand Cru locations.

The location is in the municipality of Bergheim , just a few kilometers south of Sélestat . The area is located in a hilly zone that is in front of the Vosges. The Kanzlerberg is located in a south-south-west exposure at an altitude of 230 to 255 m above sea level. NN in the western extension of another Grand Crus, the Altenberg de Bergheim . The steep slope below the Grasberg minimizes the risk of frost damage after the vines have sprouted in spring, because cold air that arises during the nights does not remain over the vineyards but can slide down towards the plain. The Vosges in the west protect the lee wine-growing region from too much rainfall in south-west or west-westerly weather conditions. This results in an above-average length of sunshine for the northern location. The vineyard is within the northern part of the warp trench of Ribeauvillé the valley of the mountain stream at the entrance. The ground is heavy. The loamy marl rests on a soil from the Upper Triassic (also called Keuper ). The influences of the Middle Triassic (also called Muschelkalk ) predominate in valleys . In the soil of the Kanzlerberg you can occasionally find crystals of barite and fluorite .

Grape varieties

The location and the soil quality favor the cultivation of Riesling (approx. 1.5 hectares of planted vineyards), Gewürztraminer (approx. 0.5 hectares of planted vineyards) and Pinot Gris (approx. 0.8 hectares of planted vineyards). There are thus around 2.8 hectares of the total 3.23 hectares under yield. In principle, the Muscat d'Alsace grape varieties (i.e. Muscat Ottonel or Muscat blanc à petits grains ) can also be planted.

history

When the local Order of Malta was dissolved in 1312 , the vineyard was already in production and was already being developed separately from other locations, as the quality was already valued at that time. The name Kanzlerberg is also associated with the order. In the 19th century the location was either Tempelhoff or Canzelberg .

The wine was still very popular at the beginning of the 20th century, so that often more was sold than was produced. Therefore, it was not uncommon for wines from the neighboring Altenberg de Bergheim to be marketed under the name of the Kanzlerberg.
