The Kapu (founded 1985) is an independent cultural center in Linz . It sees itself as the center of the alternative youth culture of the region and holds regular events, mainly hip hop , rock and punk concerts with local and international bands.

The Kapu as an event location and social center is of great importance to many young people and music fans in the region and fulfills special functions for its clientele in the context of urbanity: in addition to offering cultural events, the Kapu acts as a social interface and exchange point for parts of the local artist scene (" Freie Szene Linz "). In addition to the Stadtwerkstatt and Time's Up , the Kapu is one of the few organizations of the independent scene in Linz that has a larger infrastructure that also serves individual artists as a basis for their work.

history

Hood was founded in 1985. The name is derived from the address Kapuzinerstraße 36. Since the late 1980s the name has occasionally been understood as an abbreviation for "culture-work-politics-entertainment". In 2006 their events counted more than 11,000 visitors.

Among the performed artists are, among others, Attwenger , NOFX , Le Tigre , Bikini Kill , Texta , Fugazi , Blumentopf and Slum Village . The grunge band Nirvana gave their first of only five concerts in Austria on November 20th, 1989.

The building

The house in which the KAPU is located today was built in 1788 as a school building that had to accommodate up to 550 children. After the Capuchin School closed in 1871, the Imperial and Royal Landwehr used the building as a barracks ; after the end of the First World War , it housed a soup factory and a handicraft school. In 1926 the city of Linz handed over Kapuzinerstraße 36 to the Social Democratic Workers' Party . In 1934, in the wake of the civil war , this was banned and the house was left to the parish of St. Matthias for their youth activities. After the Catholic youth organizations were also banned in 1938, the Hitler Youth followed , who occupied the building until 1945. After the end of the war, the house went back to the Socialist Youth , who from 1984 left it partly to the KAPU and in 1999 handed over the entire house to the KAPU.

activities

The KAPU sees itself as a cultural center for international contemporary and subcultural music, especially hip-hop , noise rock , rock music , punk / hardcore and others. In addition, the KAPU organizes cinema evenings , readings, exhibitions and workshops.

The Kapu is also one of the venues for the annual international Crossing Europe Film Festival and co-organizer of the annual Open Air Ottensheim , an alternative music festival for around 3000 visitors.
