The Cape Verdean-Cuban relations include intergovernmental relations between Cape Verde and Cuba . You have had direct diplomatic relations since Cape Verdean independence in 1975.

Both countries belong u. a. the Latin Union and the various UN organizations . The most important link today is Cuban development cooperation in health and education in Cape Verde.

Until Cape Verdean became independent from Portugal in 1975, relations were determined by Cuban-Portuguese relations . Historically, there have been points of contact between the two countries since the expulsion of the Jews from Portugal in 1497 and the Atlantic slave trade in the 16th century.

The uninhabited Cape Verde Islands became part of the Portuguese colonial empire after the first bypass by the Portuguese navigator António Fernandes , while Cuba became a Spanish colony after its discovery by Christopher Columbus in 1492 .

Some of the slaves for the plantation economy in Cuba then came to Cuba via the intermediate station Cape Verde.

Under Portugal's King Manuel I , the Jews were also expelled from Portugal from 1497, in part to the Cape Verde Islands. With the flight of the Jewish Marranos from Portugal and Spain at the beginning of the 16th century, numerous of these Sephardic people went to Northern Europe. Groups of these Sephardic communities also migrated to the Caribbean in batches, especially in the 17th century. This is how Portuguese Marranos came to Cuba.

Cape Verdes President Jorge Carlos Fonseca visited Cuba in 2015. On the occasion of the visit of the Cuban Vice-Chairwoman of the State Council Mercedes López Acea in February 2018, Fonseca spoke out in favor of stimulating cooperation with Cuba, especially in the health sector. In view of the announced visits of the Cape Verdean health and social affairs minister and later the Cape Verdean foreign minister to Cuba, Fonseca expressed the hope that these questions would be clarified. In return, Acea thanked Cape Verdean for its continued support for rejecting the US embargo on Cuba .
