history

Portuguese possessions around 1500

Portuguese sailors discovered the uninhabited Cape Verde Islands in 1445 and took them over from 1456 for their later colonial empire. In 1500, the Portuguese explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral landed for the first time in what is now Brazil, which was previously unknown in Europe. The Cape Verde Islands then became an important stopover in the Atlantic slave trade between West Africa and Brazil. Even after Portugal was the first country to pass a first restricted ban on the slave trade in 1761 , the slave trade remained common, especially in the empire of Brazil, which had been independent since 1822 , and only came to a standstill after further bans by the colonial power Portugal in the 19th century.

After the Carnation Revolution in 1974 and the subsequent end of the Portuguese colonial wars, the now democratic Portugal granted Cape Verde independence in 1975. Shortly thereafter, Brazil established diplomatic relations with the young Republic of Cape Verde. A first cooperation agreement followed in 1977, which was followed in 1979 by a friendship and cooperation agreement and a cultural agreement.
