The Karabakh Range ( aserbaidschanisch silsiləsi Qarabağ ; Armenian լեռնաշղթա Արցախի ; Russian Карабахский хребет ) is a mountain in the South East of the small Caucasus .
The Karabakh Mountains extend in the NNW-SSE direction. In the north it is separated by the Tərtər river valley from the Murovdağ , which runs further north . In the west, the Hakari river valley forms the dividing line to the Karabakh highlands . The macaws flow along the southern flank . To the east, the mountains descend to the Transcaucasian Depression ( Kura-Aras Lowland ). Xaçınçay ( Chatschen ) and Qarqarçay ( Karkar ) drain the mountains to the Kura to the east, while the southwest flank of the mountain range lies in the catchment area of the Hakari. The highest peak of the Karabakh Mountains is the Qırxqız with 2830 m ( ⊙ ), the second highest mountain is the Böyük Kirs ( 2725 m ) ( ⊙ ).
The mountains consist mainly of sediment - and igneous rock . The mountain slopes are covered by oak forests.
