The Qarqarçay ( Azerbaijani ), Karkar ( Armenian Կարկառ , Russian Каркар ) or Karkarschai ( Russian Каркарчай ) is a right tributary of the Kura in Azerbaijan and in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic .
The Qarqarçay rises on the northern flank of the Böyük Kirs in the southern part of the Karabakh Mountains . It initially flows in a northerly direction through the mountains. It flows through a ravine near Shusha . It flows along the eastern outskirts of Stepanakert . Further north, the river passes the towns of Armenabad and Askeran . The Qarqarçay then leaves the mountainous country, which is administered by the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, and flows through the Transcaucasian Depression in an easterly direction. It flows northwest past the city of Ağcabədi and finally flows into the Kura. The Qarqarçay has a length of 115 km. It drains an area of 1490 km².
