Karama Has No Walls ( Arabic ليس للكرامة جدران) is a 2012 Yemeni documentary short film directed by Sara Ishaq . The film sheds light on the protests in Yemen during the Arab Spring and received a nomination for best documentary short film at the 2014 Academy Awards . The international recognition aroused great enthusiasm among the Yemeni population, especially on social media.

content

The film deals with the Arab Spring , in particular March 18, 2011 , the "Day of Dignity" (Juma'at Al-Karama), on which state snipers shot 52 civilians and injured hundreds. The day is often seen as a turning point in the events of the 2011/2012 protests in Yemen . The events led to a change of mood within society and ultimately to the overthrow of the 33-year-old president, Ali Abdullah Salih .

The two cameramen, 16-year-old Nasr al-Namir and his friend Khaled Rajeh, are considered to be the observers of the revolution. Both worked for an opposition television station and were nearly killed. The original footage, blurred and unprocessed, forms the basis for the film. Interviews are also shown with family members whose relatives were killed on March 18.

criticism

The New Yorker called the film "a lament for the dead and an exploration of loss and protracted trauma." All in all, Karama Has No Walls is a “hymn to the strength of resistance without violence”. The weekly magazine Entertainment Weekly certified the film a "powerful story about brutal systems of government, rebellion and causes that are worth fighting for".

Awards

In addition to being nominated for an Oscar, the film received an honorable mention at the Glasgow Short Film Festival 2013 for “powerful and human storytelling”.
